The Best ‘Indian’ Olympics ever at Beijing

So how long have you waited for something? One year, 2 years, 10 years!!

We Indians have waited for over 100 years to witness the spectacle given below.

India at top
India at top

(I love ‘India over China’ in this picture)

The reason? Because inspite of being a country of 1.1 billion people, we had never ever, till date won an individual Olympics gold.

But on just the 3rd day of the Beijing Olympics, we witnessed what no Indian had ever seen before. An inspired Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle in Beijing on August 11 with an incredible performance in the final. He shot a total score of 700.5.

Going into the last shot, Bindra and Hakkinen were tied for first place, but Bindra had saved the best for the last and secured the gold medal with his best shot of the final, an outstanding 10.8!

After the win, Abhinav was showered with unimaginable amounts of monetary rewards by the different state governments and individuals. Even his father gifted him a 200 crore hotel!!!!! We can say that he was lucky to enjoy the backing of an indulgent and rich father; he never had to worry about money while pursuing his passion, or distress over his future in case of failure. But, it is not the support system that makes the champion. Champions do there own bidding. He won because he had a dream, and because he pursued it single-mindedly. He practiced until he became almost perfect.

Abhinav had broken the jinx and got us the medal. And to tell the truth, all those known to me (me included) were of the opinion that we had done it for the games. No more expectations. All our desires were fulfilled with the Gold Abhinav brought.

I would like to thank Abhinav for bringing tears in my mother’s eye. She just loved the victory.

And then came another shocker!

We got another medal!

A bronze!

This time it was Sushil Kumar, claiming the bronze in the Men’s Freestyle Wrestling 66 kilogram class on 20th August. Kumar took three periods to beat Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan 2-1, 0-1 and 1-0.

One gold seemed enough for us, and here, Sushil Kumar had put the icing on the cake! I can surely say that it was one of the ‘pleasantest’ surprises of India’s sporting history. And Sushil’s expression said it all. He knew what this medal meant to us and to him.

And on the 12th day of the Olympics, a 3rd medal for India was guaranteed. Now this was seriously unbelievable for us. We have never had it this good in any Olympics till now.

Wanna fight him?
Wanna fight him?
India’s Vijender Kumar beat Carlos Gongora of Ecuador 9-4 in the quarter-finals of the 75kg middleweight category of the boxing event on Wednesday to guarantee India another medal at the Beijing Olympics. He eventually did win a bronze.

I really lack words to express my feelings. 3 medals!! Just awesome! Simply divine. We had never had it this good and I would say that this Olympic outing of ours was even better than 1983 Cricket world cup win. What was great about these medals was that they came from people who were never really expected to do a lot. No medals came from the hyped Paes-Bhupati, Sania Mirza, Rathore, Anju George, Bhagwat etc. And how can we ever forget – our hockey team didn’t make it to Beijing.

What these 3 guys have done is that, they have torched the Olympic fire in India in a big way. Now they have become national heroes and kids want to imitate them. And when kids get involved in a big way in something, the results are astonishing. This is what happened to cricket.

What else to say but thanks to Abhinav, Sushil, Vijender.
