Where are we heading?

with 18 comments

While reading today’s newspaper, I read my horoscope after a gap of many months. Thankfully, it had all things worth reading and it seemed that life this week would be ‘worth living’. But just below the horoscope, I came across a news item titled “In UP husband elopes and woman is paraded naked” (Read the entire story here). I read the story and was shell shocked!

Are we bloody barbarians?

How can you treat a woman like that?

Why should a woman be punished for her husband’s mistakes? And that too in a manner like that!

Where exactly are we heading?

  1. That story is just unbelievable. I can’t believe that anyone would think that it’s acceptable to treat a woman in that manner, and for her husband’s involvement in the scandal, at that!

There are a few times when I am not proud of being an Indian. This incident is one of those rare instances.

  3. That was the most outrageous news I read yesterday. I did spit out curses from my living room. That’s India in 21st century.

Sadly, there are still various social maladies that we can be better off without. Instead of all the civil vigilance crap that we parade for a better nation, I’d rather we give a better life to our sisters.

  4. Problem is with our mind set. We(men) project ourselves as the stronger ones.
We have enough laws to take on any these self styled heroes, but, trust me, laws are being hgiven a miss just in case it makes one lose votes.

I feel the same Len. Instead of sitting on hunger strikes to eradicate corruption, it would be better if people could first do something to get their own house in order. One can fight corruption only when one has strong values (or not even strong ones….just simple ones like showing respect to women)

I agree with you. Our system has a lot of power and legitimacy. It is only about owning up that power and using it in a socially responsible way!

  12. Its heart-rending news…..it makes me wonder abt the people who did the act. They have so much hatred and violence inside them.
